If you think cybercrime is only a problem for big companies, you’re wrong.

While data breaches at big companies generate more news coverage, the reality is small businesses are the main targets for cyber criminals. According to the UK Government, 74% of all targeted scams in 2015 were directed at small and medium-sized businesses.

So, what impact does this have on your customers? We recently surveyed 1000 UK consumers to get their views on payments security and how it impacts their shopping habits. Here’s what’s on their minds and how your security plan gives them confidence in your business.

  • Consumers are concerned about online payments.
    While they acknowledge payments security is far more advanced than it was 10 years ago, 70% of our survey respondents said they are highly concerned with online payment security. If you accept online payments, it might be a good idea to place details of your gateway provider’s security tools on your checkout page. This will help assure your customers that you’ve taken extra precautions to protect their personal information.
  • They don’t bother with social payments.
    Consumers’ shopping behaviour greatly aligns with their views on the security of a particular method, which explains why 63% of consumers said they would not trust any social media platform for accepting payments. Despite the prevalence of social media in today’s society, it’s still an online form of payment and hasn’t been vetted to consumer liking
  • The impact of fraud is growing.
    Our research shows that 12% of consumers have been victims of fraud in the last 12 months, and the actual loss amount is significant. Consumers lose about £4,000 on average per fraudulent event, which is an 84% increase from £2,169 last year.
